The Subway Man

                  words by Lesleigh Smith
                  music by Tim Salmon

Saw a man on the subway today;
he was old and tired and his hair was grey.
I could see in his eyes he'd had a hard life;
at the subway stop he looked at me.

Chorus: He rides the cars with nowhere to go;
             he begs for money when the Aqua Velva's low;
             people look at him with disgust and dismay.
             Someday this life will put him away.

Lost and alone, I asked where was home.
He talked to me of kids and a wife,
of olden days before the devil took his life:
the street is home and he's so alone.

Chorus

He pulled a brown paper sack from his coat;
he offered me some of his everyday hope.
I passed it back and with a grin
he drank it down and wiped his chin.

Chorus

Today has come; tomorrow is gone.
This is why I write this song:
As the subway pulls away,
I look at the reflection; that man is me.

Chorus

ahhh ah
ahhh ah a a
ahhh ah
ahhh ah a a
